The Trump administration has suspended eight technology and outsourcing companies from a federal process used to sponsor workers for employment-based green cards.

Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling announced the move at a White House news conference with Vice President JD Vance. Microsoft, Adobe, Cognizant, Infosys, Tata, Wipro, HCL and Capgemini were suspended from the Permanent Labor Certification program, known as PERM. The Labor Department will no longer accept new applications involving those companies or process their pending applications, Sonderling said.

PERM is often an early step toward permanent U.S. residency through an employer. Companies must demonstrate that qualified U.S. workers are not available for the job and that hiring a foreign worker would not harm the pay or working conditions of similarly employed U.S. workers.

The action does not end the H-1B visa program or cancel existing H-1B status. That program provides temporary status to eligible specialty-occupation workers; the suspension instead affects the companies’ ability to use a route toward permanent residency.
