EPA scraps federal climate rules for fossil fuel power plants

The Trump administration has repealed federal limits on greenhouse gas emissions from U.S. fossil fuel power plants, with EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announcing the move Monday in Houston.

The rollback removes regulations adopted under President Joe Biden that were set to force operating coal plants and newly built gas-fired plants to sharply curb carbon dioxide emissions in the 2030s. Zeldin also said the EPA is proposing to withdraw its remaining greenhouse gas standards for power plants.

Power plants are the nation’s second-largest source of carbon dioxide emissions after transportation. Environmental groups said ending the rules will worsen climate and health harms, and they plan to challenge the decision in court.
