Harris County judge candidates Letitia Plummer and Orlando Sanchez appeared to agree on disaster preparedness at a Sunday forum in Houston. Both pledged to support raising $1 million from public and private sources for at least three new community lighthouses.
The Metropolitan Organization, which runs the lighthouse program, held the October 4 forum at Congregation Beth Israel. The hubs are intended to provide power, heating or cooling, food and medical support during grid failures.
Plummer, a former Houston City Council member and the Democratic candidate, pointed to her work securing a generator for Kashmere Gardens Multipurpose Center and emphasized flood protection. Sanchez, a former Harris County treasurer and the Republican candidate, said reliable local power matters because not every household can afford a generator.
Four main candidates for Harris County Commissioners Court also answered questions from church and synagogue representatives. Forum rules barred candidates from using their responses to campaign or criticize opponents.
