ISFA wants White Sox to stay
The Illinois Sports Facilities Authority said this week that keeping the White Sox at Rate Field is its top goal and that it does not back a proposed move to the South Loop.
At a board meeting in Bridgeport, the authority also said neighborhood worries about Amtrak’s planned rail maintenance site near South Canal Street deserve attention. Amtrak was set to hold a Thursday community meeting on the project, which has drawn objections tied to possible noise and air-quality effects.
The White Sox lease at the publicly owned ballpark runs through 2029 and can be extended one year to 2030. Leslie Darling, chair of the authority’s board, said members learned of Amtrak’s plan after it was made public on Aug. 14 and have not yet met with the rail company.
Meanwhile, Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth have asked the Federal Railroad Administration and Amtrak for more detail and better communication after hearing from residents and local officials in Bridgeport and Chinatown. Their request cited concerns about the project’s operations and possible effects on safety, traffic and the environment.
