Judge voids Brooklyn Democratic Party rule changes
A New York State Supreme Court judge has blocked rule changes approved at an August meeting of the Brooklyn Democratic Party, finding that outgoing executive committee members were not allowed to cast the votes that pushed them through.
Judge Jill Epstein ruled Monday that those members had no authority to vote, and the decision permanently stops the amended rules from taking effect. The changes would have added dozens of seats to the executive committee and, according to the court finding described in the ruling, likely strengthened Chair Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn’s hold over the party.
The dispute centered on whether members leaving the executive committee could still participate in the vote. Epstein concluded that their votes made the difference, so the changes must be treated as invalid. The decision is expected to be appealed.
