Mahmoud Khalil filed a federal lawsuit against Columbia University on Monday, accusing the school of failing to protect pro-Palestinian activists from harassment and doxxing.
The complaint was filed by Khalil, former Columbia student Mohammad Ibrahim Zubairi and the SIPA Palestine Working Group. They allege the university failed to respond to severe and coordinated harassment targeting pro-Palestinian student activists and say that conduct helped enable doxxing.
The suit also claims Columbia’s actions directly led to Khalil’s detention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in March 2025. The plaintiffs are seeking damages and other relief under federal civil rights law and other obligations they say the university owed students.
Columbia declined to comment on the pending case. In a statement, spokesperson Samantha Slater said the university takes seriously its responsibility to protect its community from discrimination and harassment and to respond when concerns arise.
