All six of Mayor Daniel Lurie’s new appointees to the San Francisco Youth Commission attend private schools.
The six members were sworn in on Sept. 9. The 17-member commission advises city leaders on issues affecting children and youth, with 11 members appointed by supervisors and six by the mayor.
Records from the Youth Commission and the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors show this is the only recorded case since 2016-17 in which none of the mayor’s appointees came from a public school. According to the commission’s acting director, staff had recommended 12 applicants to the mayor’s office this year, including three public high school students, seven private school students and two graduates of San Francisco public schools.
Six of the 11 supervisor-appointed commissioners attend public schools, while 11 of the 17 current commissioners overall attend private schools. Mayor’s spokesperson Charles Lutvak said the appointees come from diverse backgrounds.
