Microsoft’s access to a federal green card sponsorship program is being suspended by the Trump administration amid allegations of visa misuse. Vice President JD Vance said Thursday that the restriction also covers Adobe and six outsourcing firms, barring new filings and the processing of pending applications under the Permanent Labor Certification Program, or PERM.
The administration alleges that the companies used visa programs to replace U.S. workers with lower-paid foreign employees. Vance cited Microsoft’s reported layoff of 6,000 American workers last year alongside 6,300 H-1B visas and nearly 3,000 green cards he said the company benefited from.
Redmond-based Microsoft disputed the suggestion that most of its visa filings were for new hires. It said 80% of approximately 6,000 H-1B applications submitted last fiscal year concerned existing employees’ status. The company said its filings for new employees involved people already legally in the United States and represented 1% of its U.S. workforce.
