President Donald Trump announced a one-time $90 payment for more than 20 million seniors to help cover Medicare premiums. The announcement came shortly before the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
The White House said eligible Medicare Part B enrollees can expect the payment in October by direct deposit or check. It said the money will come from the Medicare Improvement Fund, which Congress established in 2008 to support program operations and payments to health care providers.
To qualify, seniors must live in the United States and cannot already receive Medicaid help with premiums or pay income-adjusted premiums, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Medicare Advantage enrollees are also excluded. Medicare Part B covers services including doctor visits, ambulance rides and lab tests; monthly premiums start at around $200 and vary by income.
