Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass criticized President Donald Trump after he suggested at a Nebraska rally that Iran could attack Los Angeles and San Diego. Bass called the remarks irresponsible, saying a president should protect Americans rather than appear to invite an attack.

Trump made the comments Monday night in Grand Island while defending the U.S. war with Iran. He described higher gas prices as a cost of keeping the world safe and said the war would end soon. Some in the crowd cheered after he mentioned the two California cities.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom also condemned the remarks. He said he had directed the state’s Threat Assessment Center to monitor whether foreign actors might interpret them as an invitation to target California. Bass said Tuesday she knew of no active threat to Southern California stemming from the war. San Diego’s mayor and Rep. Sara Jacobs, whose district includes the city, also objected to Trump’s comments.
