The US Justice Department is seeking to revoke the citizenship of 40 naturalized Americans accused of crimes. Officials announced the effort Monday, calling it their largest group of denaturalization filings over a single period under the Trump administration.
The department said it submitted the requests in multiple federal courts between August 21 and October 2. The alleged offenses include acting as an agent for a foreign government and voluntary manslaughter. Attorney General Todd Blanche alleged that the people targeted had concealed significant facts from the government.
Filing a case does not itself revoke citizenship. Under federal law, a court can strip a naturalized citizen of that status if the government proves it was obtained illegally through concealment of a material fact or willful misrepresentation. In 2025, the department instructed its civil division to increase denaturalization efforts.
