Seattle mayor proposes moving $5 million in gun violence contracts to CARE
Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson has proposed shifting $5 million in community violence intervention contracts to the city’s CARE Department in her 2027 budget.
Wilson unveiled the plan Tuesday, saying the change would place gun violence prevention work under the same department that already oversees 911 dispatch and crisis response. The proposal would move contracts with nine organizations from the Human Services Department to CARE.
The contracts cover services including support for shooting victims, conflict mediation, and intensive outreach to people involved in gun violence. City officials say the change is meant to improve coordination when shootings happen and make it easier to track which groups are already working with specific individuals.
Wilson has framed the plan as part of a broader public safety approach that relies on agencies outside the police department. CARE leaders say violence prevention efforts have been spread across different departments, slowing coordination.
