Eviction filings in metro Atlanta far exceed peer cities
Metro Atlanta recorded about 140,000 eviction filings in 2025, with researchers saying the region’s filing pace was roughly triple the national level and above other large U.S. metro areas.
About 31,000 of those cases were filed inside the City of Atlanta, equal to one filing for every four renter households. Researchers with Eviction Lab said New York City, despite having about four times as many renter households as metro Atlanta, logged roughly 25,000 fewer filings over the same period.
Eviction Lab found that 95% of filings were tied to unpaid rent, and that tenants in Atlanta typically face a case after falling about one month behind. The researchers also said around 65% of filings are later dismissed after payment, but the court record can still affect renters seeking housing later.
