A coastal flood warning covers Malibu and Los Angeles County beaches through 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11. The National Weather Service issued it Friday afternoon, forecasting surf of 4 to 7 feet and strong rip currents.
Damaging seawater flooding is likely at vulnerable south-facing beaches, particularly in Malibu and Long Beach, the agency said. It expects minor flooding at other beaches and harbors, along with significant erosion across beach areas. High tides of 7.3 to 7.6 feet are expected each morning.
Sunday’s flooding remains uncertain because rain, wind, tidal conditions and swells from several directions could intensify it. The warning may be extended beyond Sunday or changed to a coastal flood advisory through Tuesday.
The weather service urged people to avoid beaches, coastal walkways and rocks, and not to drive through barricades or water of unknown depth. Breaking waves and rip currents pose dangers to swimmers, surfers and small boats near shore.
