Pennsylvania reports fourth measles-linked death
Pennsylvania health officials said Tuesday that a fourth death has been linked to measles as the state outbreak continues to grow.
The latest cases were in Jefferson and Mifflin counties. In Mifflin County, the coroner said an unvaccinated 18-year-old died from measles complications. In Jefferson County, state officials identified another recent measles-associated death as a 40-year-old woman who had asthma and severe lung disease. The Health Department said both recent deaths were tied to measles after investigations with county coroners.
All four measles-associated deaths in Pennsylvania were reported within the past month, the first such deaths in the state in 35 years. State data show nearly 700 measles cases and 133 hospitalizations this year. The department counts a death as measles-associated when there is clinical evidence of infection, a positive lab test and the death occurs within 30 days of symptoms starting.
