A Chilean fruit supplier has expanded its recall of frozen organic berries sold at Walmart and Trader Joe’s after the products were linked to an E. coli outbreak that sickened 17 people.
Six people were hospitalized in Florida and Georgia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. No deaths were reported. The Florida Department of Health alerted the CDC to the outbreak in July, and the agency closed its investigation on Sept. 21.
Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. added lots of Great Value Organic Triple Berry Blend and Organic Blueberries to the recall, as well as a lot of Trader Joe’s Organic Mixed Berry Blend, according to the Food and Drug Administration. The affected Walmart products reached stores in 30 states and Puerto Rico; the Trader Joe’s berries were sold in 26 states and Washington, D.C.
Consumers with recalled berries should discard them or return them to the store where they were purchased.
