Six fifth- and sixth-graders in Daphne Fuller’s class at Patterson Elementary in Gilbert have become Kidcasters, sharing a daily routine centered on the weather. Most of the students are nonverbal.
The class, near Guadalupe Road and Val Vista Drive, discusses the forecast each morning through what Fuller calls total communication. Students can use body language, eye gaze, facial expressions, sounds and movement to express themselves.
Meteorologist Jorge Torres visited the classroom on a particularly wet morning in the Valley, giving the students a change from the hot, sunny conditions they usually discuss. Fuller said understanding how each student communicates takes getting to know them as a whole person.
