Houston ISD families are calling for lasting fixes to recurring air-conditioning problems in classrooms. Parents and teachers say the heat has disrupted school days, while families have also raised concerns about how repairs are communicated.
At Pugh Elementary, classrooms reached 89 degrees. The district says the air-conditioning problem there has been repaired and the rooms are now cool. HISD says its aging cooling systems require continued maintenance and repairs, alongside investment in longer-term solutions.
Cindy Mood, president of the Askew Elementary PTO, said students should be able to focus on learning rather than cope with hot classrooms. Families want the underlying problems addressed, not just temporary relief from measures such as fans and portable air conditioners.
