Hundreds gathered Wednesday to celebrate the opening of Pinehurst Station, Sound Transit’s first infill light rail stop, in North Seattle. The station sits above I-5 near NE 130th Street, adding a stop to an existing line.
The turnout was far larger than the “small community event” the opening had been billed as. Sound Transit held a ribbon cutting the previous evening, and service began on a weekday. CEO Dow Constantine told a board committee the next day that visitors had arrived on foot, by bike and on King County Metro’s new Route 77.
Visitors listened to live music and made art with Romson Bustillo, whose porcelain enamel paintings decorate the station. Others lined up for a Boop collectible. The station’s pop-up merchandise shop began running low on stock, while one food truck served the crowd.
