Muni’s “Fare Required” bus signs are confusing some riders
San Francisco Muni began alternating “Fare Required” on bus front signs in August, and some riders say the change makes it harder to tell which line is arriving.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency says the display is part of its Fares For Our Future campaign to improve fare payment as the system faces major funding shortfalls. Riders have reported trouble spotting route numbers and destinations quickly, especially at busy stops where several lines arrive close together. Some have said they boarded the wrong bus after the signs changed.
According to the agency, the broader fare campaign also includes hiring more fare inspectors, promoting discounts for seniors, youth and low-income riders, updating payment collection methods and requiring agency employees to tap agency-issued Clipper cards instead of showing staff badges as proof of payment. Some buses have also shown “Mask Required,” which the report says is likely a leftover setting from COVID-era policies on some onboard computers.
