New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a statewide disaster emergency on October 5 in response to a measles outbreak. Her order, in effect through November 4, is intended to give the state more capacity to provide vaccinations and testing and support local health departments.
State figures show 108 measles cases among New York residents as of October 3. Of those, 92 were reported since July 15 in under-immunized communities spanning 18 counties.
Rockland County health officials say the county has no active cases; its last case was in March. The county health department has announced free MMR vaccinations.
The CDC counted 3,887 confirmed cases nationwide as of October 1. Pennsylvania’s health department reported 1,004 confirmed cases in 39 counties by October 5, with 198 hospitalizations and five deaths associated with measles.
