Southern California’s record-breaking October heat is expected to continue through the rest of the week. The National Weather Service says relief from the prolonged heat wave is not expected until the weekend.
Downtown Los Angeles reached 103 degrees Friday, topping a 1995 record of 101 degrees. The weekend’s daytime highs did not set records, but overnight lows did: Saturday’s low was 76 degrees, above the previous mark of 72, and Sunday’s was 77 degrees, one degree above the previous record.
Forecasters expect highs in the 90s across most coastal and valley areas, with temperatures reaching up to 104 degrees. Heat advisories and extreme heat warnings cover coastal, valley and inland areas through Thursday.
There may be little overnight relief. Some mountain and foothill areas could remain in the 80s, while Monday’s forecast high of 101 degrees in downtown Los Angeles would tie the record set in 1971 rather than break it.
