Galveston County posts red tide advisory for beaches
Galveston County issued a red tide advisory Monday after reports of dead fish and respiratory symptoms in several locations, county health officials said.
The Galveston County Health District urged beachgoers to use caution. Water samples collected by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department showed moderate to high red tide concentrations at Galveston Island, Bolivar Peninsula and Crystal Beach, according to county officials.
Officials said red tide is caused by an algae bloom that can release airborne toxins and make it harder to breathe near the coast. People with asthma or other respiratory conditions were urged to be especially careful. The health district also advised against handling dead fish or other marine animals.
