Seattle’s transportation department is proposing paid street parking in West Seattle Junction and Upper Queen Anne, a change that has drawn objections from some residents and business owners. Free parking on much of the neighborhoods’ main commercial streets could end next year if the plan goes ahead.

Under the proposal, drivers would pay for parking with a two-hour limit from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The proposed rate is $1 an hour until 11 a.m. and $4 an hour for the rest of the day. The Seattle Department of Transportation says the change is meant to free up spaces more often as the neighborhoods grow; parking revenue would go to the city’s general fund.

The proposed areas include parts of California Avenue SW and nearby streets in the Junction, and Queen Anne Avenue N and adjoining blocks in Upper Queen Anne. SDOT says it last reviewed parking in Upper Queen Anne in 2008 and in the Junction in 2017.
