Entry-level tech openings in New York City have fallen by half since 2022, even as AI adoption has surged and overall employment has remained steady.

A new analysis by the Center for an Urban Future found the sharp drop in entry-level postings, cutting off a common route into higher-paying tech work for younger job seekers. At the same time, tech employment in the city remains stable, and state Labor Department data for July shows New York added about 60,000 jobs over the past year.

Recent survey results from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York point to fast-growing AI use across local businesses. Sixty percent of service firms reported using AI, up from 40% a year earlier, while half of manufacturers said they use it, roughly double the share from a year ago.

The available data points to pressure concentrated at the bottom of the hiring ladder rather than across the broader job market. Small job gains were also recorded in finance and professional services, two sectors where AI adoption is also rising.
