The mother and stepfather of an 8-year-old girl who died after an asthma attack in San Jose face felony child neglect charges. The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office said authorities have ruled her death a homicide.
Prosecutors allege Gabrielle Hanson, 32, and Jacob Randolph, 39, waited eight hours before seeking medical help while the girl was in serious distress. Emergency crews reached the family’s East San Jose home on Lancelot Lane shortly before 10 a.m. on May 13. The child remained on life support before she died days later.
The county medical examiner found that severe asthma and an acute lung injury associated with a viral infection deprived the girl’s brain of oxygen. The chief medical examiner also attributed her death largely to medical neglect, prosecutors said.
Seven young children lived in the home, where prosecutors described unsafe and unsanitary conditions. The district attorney’s office said medical and social service workers had warned the parents repeatedly about conditions there.
