Oakland police say Vernika Dunbar shot her sister, Mackayla “Kash” Paige, when a gun discharged during a fight on 14th Street.
Dunbar, 38, told officers she was trying to strike a woman who was fighting Paige, according to a police report. The arrest report says she had taken the gun from one of two women accompanying them to help her sister, and that surveillance video was consistent with her account.
Officers found Paige, 29, with a gunshot wound at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. She died at a hospital, the police department said. Paige had appeared in online reality shows on the Now That’s TV streaming network.
The Alameda County district attorney’s office charged Dunbar with felony involuntary manslaughter, assault with a firearm and carrying a loaded firearm in public, as well as misdemeanor brandishing a firearm in public.
