Harris County commissioners are set to take a final vote Thursday on proposed property tax increases tied to an estimated $181 million budget shortfall.
The vote will cover the tax rate and the fiscal 2027 budget, with a public hearing also expected. County officials have advanced a proposed county property tax rate of up to 41.750 cents per $100 of taxable value, up from 38.096 cents in 2025.
That proposed county rate is about 9.6% higher than the current level. When county-controlled taxing entities are combined, the Office of Management and Budget said the package would amount to an overall increase of about 7.6%. Judge Lina Hidalgo has estimated the proposal would cost the average Harris County taxpayer about $120 more per year, though the actual impact would depend on taxable value and exemptions.
At an earlier Commissioners Court meeting on Sept. 8, the proposal moved forward on a 3-2 vote. Officials said keeping the county tax rate unchanged could require about $243 million in budget cuts.
