Downtown Los Angeles reached 102 degrees by 12:50 p.m. Friday, breaking the daily temperature record, the National Weather Service said. Forecasters said it could get hotter there later in the afternoon.
Triple-digit heat also reached other parts of Los Angeles County. Woodland Hills registered 103 degrees, with a high of 105 to 107 expected, while Burbank was in the 100-to-102-degree range. Long Beach was hotter than forecast.
The weather service expected the heat to last through the coming week, with little day-to-day change across most Los Angeles County areas. Extreme Heat Warnings were also in effect for coastal and inland Orange County through 8 p.m. Thursday.
Los Angeles County public health officials urged residents to drink water, avoid outdoor activity during the hottest hours when possible, and seek air-conditioned spaces or cooling centers if their homes cannot be kept cool.
