Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a State Disaster Emergency on Oct. 5 as New York recorded 108 confirmed measles cases this year, according to the state Health Department. Seven cases were in New York City and 101 were elsewhere in the state.
The order broadens who can administer measles vaccines, allowing paramedics, advanced emergency medical services providers and pharmacists, among other health professionals, to give shots. It also permits nurses, as well as doctors, to order measles tests.
Hochul issued the order amid rising cases in New York and nearby states. The move is intended to expand vaccination and testing capacity against the highly contagious respiratory disease.
