NJ Transit rail riders face five weeks of cancellations and timetable changes beginning Sunday, Oct. 11, as crews shift the final track from the old Portal Bridge to its replacement over the Hackensack River.
All NJ Transit rail lines except the Atlantic City Rail Line will see major schedule changes. On weekdays, Morris & Essex, Gladstone Branch and Montclair-Boonton trains that normally serve New York Penn Station will run to Hoboken instead; their Penn Station service will continue on weekends. Riders can connect from Hoboken by PATH, ferry or NJ Transit bus.
Separate construction will also require some riders on the North Jersey Coast, Port Jervis and Raritan Valley lines to use buses. Amtrak plans schedule changes while it carries out eight Northeast Corridor maintenance projects during the period of reduced rail traffic.
The $2.3 billion Portal North Bridge project is designed to ease a bottleneck caused in part by the old bridge opening for boats. NJ Transit expects regular service to return Sunday, Nov. 15, after bridge work and safety testing are complete.
