Former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger is scheduled for release from prison on Oct. 16, Texas Department of Criminal Justice inmate records indicate. The records list the Christina Melton Crain Unit in Gatesville as her place of release.

Guyger was convicted in 2019 of murdering her upstairs neighbor, Botham Jean, and sentenced to 10 years. Her defense attorney argued that she mistook Jean’s apartment for her own and shot him believing he was a burglar. After denying her parole in 2024, the parole board approved her early release last week.

Before any release, Guyger is to receive her parole conditions and be assigned an officer to whom she must report. Jean’s family said attorney Lee Merritt has not represented them since 2022 and was not authorized to make statements to the media on their behalf.
