Proposed Trump administration changes to Head Start regulations could put preschool mental health support at risk in San Francisco.
Head Start rules prohibit expelling children and require programs to address troubling behavior. In San Francisco, social-emotional specialists work with families and mental health consultants to understand children’s needs. The proposed changes could put those specialists’ jobs at risk.
At one center, staff supported a nonverbal toddler with autism who had been crying, pushing and hitting other children. After learning that his father had been detained and deported by ICE, they spent more time with him. Social-emotional specialist Sandra Solis said they wanted him to feel safe and cared for.
