Huntington Beach officials temporarily closed a stretch of coastline Tuesday after a reported sighting of a great white shark near Lifeguard Tower 16.
The Huntington Beach Fire Department said it received a credible report of a shark estimated at 10 to 12 feet long. The animal was reportedly circling, behavior that Marine Safety protocols classify as aggressive.
The closure runs from Seapoint to the Huntington Beach Pier, extending roughly a mile in each direction from the lifeguard tower. Firefighters said the area would remain closed until at least 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Marine safety personnel posted warning signs, notified beachgoers and were expected to continue monitoring the area. Officials asked visitors to follow posted signs and lifeguards' instructions.
