Los Angeles County has been designated to take over key administrative duties for regional homelessness programs after a 331-9 vote by the Los Angeles Continuum of Care’s general membership.
The county’s Department of Homeless Services and Housing is set to serve as the collaborative applicant and oversee the annual point-in-time homelessness count. The vote comes as the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, or LAHSA, faces scrutiny over allegations of mismanagement and misuse of taxpayer money.
The designation could affect the region’s ability to receive hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding and provide housing services to more than 11,000 people. A final determination is expected at a federal court status conference on Oct. 27, when a preliminary injunction concerning LAHSA’s suspension of access to federal dollars is set to expire.
