San José officials say a tentative agreement with the city’s two largest employee unions is expected to avert a strike that threatened to disrupt city services.
AFSCME Local 101, the Municipal Employees’ Federation, and IFPTE Local 21, the City Association of Management Personnel, together represent as many as 4,500 workers. The tentative deal follows months of stalled negotiations. Officials expect the City Council to give final approval before the end of October.
Mayor Matt Mahan said the proposed three-year contract aims to pay city employees fairly while maintaining essential services, including emergency response and library hours.
