New York City orders 10 Bronx cooling towers cleaned after Legionnaires' outbreak
New York City health officials ordered 10 cooling towers in the South Bronx to be disinfected after a Legionnaires' outbreak sickened nine people and left one person dead.
One of the towers is at Yankee Stadium, and Lincoln Hospital was also identified among the sites covered by the order, according to city officials. The cleanup effort comes as officials respond to a growing cluster of cases in the Bronx.
Legionnaires' disease is tied to bacteria that can spread through contaminated water droplets, and cooling towers are a known focus during outbreak investigations. Health officials have not released further details here on the victim or on additional sites beyond the 10 towers ordered cleaned.
