The San Francisco 49ers improved to 4-0 with a 24-14 win over the Denver Broncos on Sunday, breaking open a close game with help from their defense and special teams.
Siran Neal forced a fumble from punt returner Marvin Mims Jr. and recovered it at the Denver 28-yard line with 9:52 left in the third quarter. Brock Purdy finished the ensuing drive with a touchdown pass to Deebo Samuel, giving San Francisco its first lead. Purdy then led two more consecutive touchdown drives, with Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle scoring in the second half.
The game was tied 3-3 at halftime after the 49ers struggled on offense, including a failed fourth-and-1 quarterback sneak and a blocked 54-yard field-goal attempt. San Francisco’s defense forced four punts before halftime and held Denver without a touchdown for the first 55 minutes. Kittle’s 56-yard score on a screen pass put the 49ers ahead by two scores with 2:15 remaining.
