The Big Ten is naming its Women’s Soccer Goalkeeper of the Year award after Mia Hamant, a former University of Washington goalkeeper, the conference announced Thursday.
Hamant died on November 6, 2025, at age 21 after being diagnosed with stage 4 SMARCB1-deficient renal medullary carcinoma that April. In her 2024 season as Washington’s full-time starter, she made 75 saves and recorded seven shutouts in 17 appearances, including 15 starts.
Washington plans to recognize the award at halftime of Thursday night’s match against Iowa. The game is designated Huskies For A Cure and is part of an athletics initiative supporting research at UW Medicine’s Cancer Vaccine Institute.
Three days after Hamant’s death, Washington won the Big Ten tournament championship against Michigan State in a penalty shootout. The Huskies went on to reach the Sweet 16.
