The Golden State Valkyries beat the Las Vegas Aces 83-81 on Wednesday to take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five WNBA semifinal series. Veronica Burton put Golden State ahead with a deep 3-pointer with 41 seconds left, then made two late free throws.
Las Vegas had one last chance after Jackie Young missed a free throw with six seconds remaining. Chelsea Gray collected the rebound and drove for a layup, but Kiah Stokes blocked the attempt and Burton secured the ball.
Tiffany Hayes scored 21 points for Golden State, while Gabby Williams added 20 and Kayla Thornton had 16. A’ja Wilson led the Aces with 24 points. Las Vegas had trailed by 11 entering the fourth quarter before Gray tied the game with a 3-pointer at the 2:10 mark.
The Valkyries are one win from the WNBA Finals in their second season. Game 3 is Friday in Las Vegas.
