Caleb Williams surges into early MVP conversation after Bears' opener
Caleb Williams entered the NFL MVP conversation after leading the Bears to a 59-37 season-opening win over the Panthers in Charlotte.
Williams completed 72 percent of his passes and became the first Bears quarterback in the franchise's 106-year history to post a passer rating above 124 while also rushing for 65 yards. By Monday morning, his MVP odds had moved to 9-to-1, putting him fourth among the league's early favorites.
The start has fueled rare optimism around a Bears quarterback. Chicago has not had an NFL MVP since Walter Payton won the award in 1977, and Williams had never been selected to a Pro Bowl before this season. Even so, he had already emerged as a popular preseason MVP pick, and the opener did nothing to cool that talk.
