Grant Taylor has led the White Sox with 6⅓ postseason innings in relief, striking out 11, walking one and allowing no earned runs. His two playoff appearances have also sharpened a question for Chicago: could the 24-year-old eventually start?
The White Sox are balancing Taylor’s effectiveness against the strain of longer outings as they sit two wins from the American League Championship Series. He has thrown 90⅓ innings across the regular season and playoffs, within the club’s initial target of 85 to 100 for the season. Longer appearances are giving him more chances to face hitters a second time.
Taylor’s move to the bullpen followed soreness after starts at Double-A Birmingham last year, according to senior pitching adviser Brian Bannister. His pitch mix now includes a slider that has become more prominent this season and a sinker developed this spring. Whether he returns to a starting role remains unresolved.
