Austin Wells ended Drew Rasmussen’s no-hit bid with two outs in the eighth inning Saturday, but was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a triple.
The Yankees catcher lined the ball just inside the right-field line as New York trailed Tampa Bay 1-0. Wells was credited with a double, but kept running. Right fielder Victor Mesa Jr. relayed the ball through Richie Palacios to Junior Caminero, who received it at third as Wells slid in, ending the inning.
Rasmussen struck out 10 through eight innings at Tropicana Field. Apart from Wells, the only Yankees to reach base in that span were Ben Rice and Jazz Chisholm Jr., both on walks. The Rays had won the American League East and held home-field advantage in the best-of-five Division Series.
