Pope Leo XIV criticized the death penalty on Saturday, describing it as an attack on human dignity amid U.S. plans for a public execution of Nidal Malik Hasan.
His remarks came a day after senior Church officials condemned a U.S. Defense Department decision to livestream the execution. Hasan was convicted in the Fort Hood shooting.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced plans to make the execution public, but President Donald Trump has said he will make the final decision on whether it is livestreamed.
