Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker says he has lost 80 pounds since spring 2024 with help from a GLP-1 medication, diet and exercise.
Pritzker, 61, said he was diagnosed first with prediabetes and later with Type 2 diabetes. He began taking insulin before starting a GLP-1 drug, which he has not named. He said he stopped taking insulin nine months ago, his blood sugar is now normal, and he intends to lose more weight.
GLP-1 receptor agonists are drugs used mainly to manage blood sugar in people with Type 2 diabetes; some can also help treat obesity. Pritzker said he spoke publicly about his weight loss because millions of Americans live with obesity-related health conditions.
His disclosure comes months before Democrats are expected to announce presidential plans. Pritzker said he is focused for now on winning a third term as governor in November.
