New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani used a statement marking the third anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack to accuse Israel of genocide in Gaza, drawing criticism from Jewish advocates.
In the Wednesday statement, Mamdani acknowledged that Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 people in 2023. He then accused the Israeli government of carrying out an ongoing genocide and cited Palestinian casualties during the war that followed. Those allegations were the mayor’s, not independently established facts.
Jewish advocates accused Mamdani of using the anniversary to advance his criticism of Israel. Governor Kathy Hochul focused her own statement on the attack and the Jewish community. She also directed state buildings to lower their flags to half-staff and ordered several landmarks lit yellow in solidarity with Israelis.
