The U.S. Department of Education has launched an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct involving staff and students at New York City public schools.
Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Kimberly Richey said some reports indicate nearly 2,000 such instances. That figure is an allegation cited by Richey, not a finding of the investigation.
The department will examine whether the district handled complaints against teachers, administrators and other employees in line with federal Title IX requirements. Investigators will also seek to determine whether employees suspected of misconduct were permitted to resign without punishment or may have remained employed while complaints were pending. Richey said complaints have come from parents and school staff.
