New York City has reopened Lost Battalion Hall Recreation Center in Rego Park, Queens, following a $25.9 million reconstruction. Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura announced the reopening.
The project redesigned the entrance and lobby, refurbished fitness areas and updated restrooms. It also added equipment, repainted the basketball court and upgraded accessibility, safety and building systems.
The hall has a long connection to basketball. The New York Knicks used it as an auxiliary practice facility in the 1960s, and the center helped nurture local talent, including Queens native and former NBA player Kenny Smith. The building also houses one of the last surviving Works Progress Administration murals on Parks property.
