Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced $15 million to turn Staten Island’s former criminal courthouse into the borough’s first permanent community justice center.
The building at 67 Targee St. in Stapleton is slated to house justice-related programs, youth activities and support services, the governor’s office said. Officials said Staten Island is the only New York City borough without a community justice center, leaving roughly half a million residents without the same type of neighborhood-based service available elsewhere in the city.
The planned center will bring government agencies and nonprofits together and expand work already underway on the island through the Center for Justice Innovation. The nonprofit offers diversion and alternatives to incarceration, counseling, youth mentoring, workforce development and reentry support for people involved in the criminal justice system.
