Republican Andy Biggs and No Labels Party nominee Teri Hourihan clashed at a gubernatorial debate in Scottsdale on Tuesday night. Gov. Katie Hobbs did not attend the Clean Elections Commission-sponsored event.
The candidates disputed water, Medicaid, state spending and Biggs’ legislative record. Hourihan criticized the U.S. representative over a 2013 bill concerning the Colorado City police department. The measure would have permitted a takeover of the department; it passed the Arizona House but stalled in the Senate during Biggs’ tenure as Senate president.
Hourihan accused Biggs of letting the bill fail and questioned his commitment to stopping child trafficking. Biggs denied her account. He argued that Warren Jeffs, a religious leader linked to the community, was already serving a life sentence in Texas when the bill was introduced.
